Date night in is a staple of young married couples with kids and frugal fanatics. It’s brilliant! You don’t have to pay for a sitter, you don’t have travel time and you don’t have to pay for a restaurant meal or restaurant alcohol.
Yes we enjoy getting out for a date to have a nice meal in a restaurant with a glass of wine, but we can’t afford to do it as often as we like to have date night. Date night in, also known as adult dinner is the perfect solution, but we don’t want to spend much of our precious time cooking, so we rely on easy meals that we enjoy.
Set it and forget it. If your whole meal comes from the slow cooker you can get everything ready and have dinner waiting for you as soon as bed time duties are over. Look through your slow cooker recipes and choose whatever you feel is romantic, sophisticated or sexy, this is a date after all. A slow cooker full of home made baked beans is delicious, but probably isn’t the most romantic dish, beef bourguignon on the other hand screams sophistication, so choose wisely.
Sometimes we don’t feel like eating anything piping hot from the oven. In the middle of summer when it’s 95 degrees and we haven’t turned on our air conditioning yet, we feel like eating something light and fresh. A chunky salad with some crusty bread and a glass of wine is perfect. Chopping veggies is quick, so dinner will be ready in no time.
Our personal favorite date night meal is cheese, crackers and wine. Slice some fancy or not so fancy cheeses and pair with cured meats, olives, crackers, veggies and hummus. We do cook our brie, but only slightly and the recipe is so easy because there is no recipe. Preheat oven or toaster oven to 350°. Unwrap brie and place on cookie sheet . Drizzle top of brie with honey, any kind will work and bake for 5-7 minutes until soft and gooey. It’s simple, but tastes amazing.
Married and Harried Date Night Meals
We have several recipes on this blog that are perfect for date night in. Many of them we make for our own date nights. The key thing with our date night menus is speed and ease. We are usually pretty tired by the time we are done getting the kids to bed, so cooking an elaborate meal together is not something we want to do.
Cooking things that are healthy, delicious and pretty quick to make is what we like to do. We each take a task so the food is prepared even faster than if just one of us was doing it.
